Austin, Texas, is renowned as a high-tech, fast-growing city for the young and creative, a cool place to live, and the scene of internationally famous events such as SXSW and Formula 1. But as in many American cities, poverty and penury are booming along with wealth and material abundance in contemporary Austin. Rich and poor residents lead increasingly separate lives as growing socioeconomic inequality underscores residential, class, racial, and ethnic segregation. 

In Invisible in Austin, the award-winning sociologist Javier Auyero and a team of graduate students explore the lives of those working at the bottom of the social order: house cleaners, office-machine repairers, cab drivers, restaurant cooks and dishwashers, exotic dancers, musicians, and roofers, among others. Recounting their subjects’ life stories with empathy and sociological insight, the authors show us how these lives are driven by a complex mix of individual and social forces. These poignant stories compel us to see how poor people who provide indispensable services for all city residents struggle daily with substandard housing, inadequate public services and schools, and environmental risks. Timely and essential reading, Invisible in Austin makes visible the growing gap between rich and poor that is reconfiguring the cityscape of one of America’s most dynamic places, as low-wage workers are forced to the social and symbolic margins.

Auyero is the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Professor in Latin American Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, where he directs the Urban Ethnography Lab. 2e et 4e lundis du mois de 17 h à 19 h (salle 1, RdC, bât. Le France, 190-198 av de France 75013 Paris), du 9 novembre 2015 au 13 juin 2016. En mars les séances se dérouleront les 1er et 3e lundis : 7 et 21 mars 2016 (même salle)

Il ne s’agit pas d’un séminaire de recherche mais d’un enseignement surtout destiné aux étudiants, de niveau master et de doctorat. Son intention principale est pédagogique : l’objectif en est de faire connaître la sociologie de  Pierre Bourdieu qui, trop souvent, est approchée à travers des résumés, des approximations, des débats irréels et imprécis. Cette familiarisation avec l’œuvre devra être réalisée par la pratique, c’est-à-dire par la confrontation avec des travaux empiriques où les notions sont réellement employées. Bien entendu, rien n’empêche de faire aussi appel à des textes plus théoriques de Bourdieu, mais toujours dans le souci d’en montrer la portée et l’intérêt pour la recherche.

Examining an intramural conflict that erupted within the English Faculty at the University of Cambridge in the early 1980s, this book develops a theoretical analysis of disputes as they unfold within the academy. It shows how broad structural changes taking place within the English higher education system at the time reverberated through to local contexts, investigates the reception of theories originating in other countries and other disciplines upon English Studies in the United Kingdom, as well as demonstrating the significance of local institutional factors in structuring the form and content of the dispute. Capturing a key moment in the development of modern English Studies it reveals the social performance lying at the heart of public controversy and develops a new theory for analysing the workings and tribulations of intellectual life.

Marcus Morgan is a Fellow and College Lecturer at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, and a Research Associate in the Sociology Department at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Patrick Baert is Professor of Social Theory in the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge, UK.

French Sociology offers a uniquely comprehensive view of the oldest and still one of the most vibrant national traditions in sociology. Johan Heilbron covers the development of sociology in France from its beginnings in the early nineteenth century through the discipline's expansion in the late twentieth century, tracing the careers of figures from Auguste Comte to Pierre Bourdieu. Presenting fresh interpretations of how renowned thinkers such as Émile Durkheim and his collaborators defined the contours and content of the discipline and contributed to intellectual renewals in a wide range of other human sciences, Heilbron's sophisticated book is both an innovative sociological study and a major reference work in the history of the social sciences.

Heilbron recounts the halting process by which sociology evolved from a new and improbable science into a legitimate academic discipline. Having entered the academic field at the end of the nineteenth century, sociology developed along two separate tracks: one in the Faculty of Letters, engendering an enduring dependence on philosophy and the humanities, the other in research institutes outside of the university, in which sociology evolved within and across more specialized research areas. Distinguishing different dynamics and various cycles of change, Heilbron portrays the ways in which individuals and groups maneuvered within this changing structure, seizing opportunities as they arose. French Sociology vividly depicts the promises and pitfalls of a discipline that up to this day remains one of the most interdisciplinary endeavors among the human sciences in France.
