Book Description

"The Bourdieu Reader" brings together three of Pierre Bourdieu's shorter books published by The New Press as well as several articles, interviews, and speeches. In "Acts of Resistance" Bourdieu speaks out against the dismantling of public welfare in the name of private enterprise; "Firing Back" dissects the claims of neoliberalism, calling for an international social movement to counter the project of capitalist globalization; and "On Television" shows how television has had a homogenizing effect on journalism and subsequently on art, science, philosophy, and law. Six additional recent political pieces explore topics such as organizing resistance to the new world order and the role of journalists and journalism.

Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) was one of the most influential social scientists of the 20th century. He is the author of 37 books, including Distinction, named one of the 20th century’s ten most important works of sociology, as well as On Television, Acts of Resistance, and Firing Back (from The New Press).
