Ces dix textes jalonnent l’histoire des deux disciplines : la sociologie et l’anthropologie. De Karl Marx à Pierre Bourdieu en passant par Paul Broca, Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, Herbert Spencer, Lewis Morgan, Franz Boas, Lucien Lévy-Bruhl, Denise Paulme, ils nous invitent à en découvrir les auteurs fondateurs et à suivre les évolutions épistémologiques et méthodologiques qui ont bouleversé la science du social du XIXe au XXe siècle. Évolutions fondamentales qui ont permis la naissance des sciences sociales et un changement de regard sur l’altérité lointaine, entre « science des races » et relativisme culturel.

Cet ouvrage est également une initiation au commentaire de textes. L’étudiant est guidé afin de s'approprier les techniques qu'impose cet exercice :  sélectionner des informations, les organiser en un plan cohérent, expliquer le texte, rédiger une introduction et une conclusion. L'acquisition de cette méthodologie est un des gages de réussite à l'université.

 

Carole Reynaud-Paligot enseigne la sociologie à l'Université de Bourgogne, elle est chercheure associée au Centre de recherche en histoire du XIXe siècle de l'Université de Panthéon-Sorbonne, Paris 1. Autrice de nombreux ouvrages, elle  s’est fait reconnaître comme une spécialiste de l’histoire culturelle, sociale et politique avec notamment Parcours politiques des surréalistes (CNRS éditions,1995), La République raciale (PUF, 2006), Race, racisme et antiracisme dans les années 1930 (PUF, 2007), De l'identité nationale. Science, race et politique (PUF, 2011), L'École aux colonies 1816-1940 (Champ Vallon, 2021), On vient vraiment tous d’Afrique ? Des préjugés au racisme (avec E.Heyer) (2019).

Examining an intramural conflict that erupted within the English Faculty at the University of Cambridge in the early 1980s, this book develops a theoretical analysis of disputes as they unfold within the academy. It shows how broad structural changes taking place within the English higher education system at the time reverberated through to local contexts, investigates the reception of theories originating in other countries and other disciplines upon English Studies in the United Kingdom, as well as demonstrating the significance of local institutional factors in structuring the form and content of the dispute. Capturing a key moment in the development of modern English Studies it reveals the social performance lying at the heart of public controversy and develops a new theory for analysing the workings and tribulations of intellectual life.

Marcus Morgan is a Fellow and College Lecturer at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge, and a Research Associate in the Sociology Department at the University of Cambridge, UK.
Patrick Baert is Professor of Social Theory in the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge, UK.
