In The Rise and Fall of American Art, 1940s-1980s, Catherine Dossin challenges the now-mythic perception of New York as the undisputed center of the art world between the end of World War II and the fall of the Berlin Wall, a position of power that brought the city prestige, money, and historical recognition. Dossin reconstructs the concrete factors that led to the shift of international attention from Paris to New York in the 1950s, and documents how ‘peripheries’ such as Italy, Belgium, and West Germany exerted a decisive influence on this displacement of power. As the US economy sank into recession in the 1970s, however, American artists and dealers became increasingly dependent on the support of Western Europeans, and cities like Cologne and Turin emerged as major commercial and artistic hubs - a development that enabled European artists to return to the forefront of the international art scene in the 1980s. Dossin analyses in detail these changing distributions of geopolitical and symbolic power in the Western art worlds - a story that spans two continents, forty years, and hundreds of actors. Her transnational and interdisciplinary study provides an original and welcome supplement to more traditional formal and national readings of the period.

Chaque année, pointant le faible écho rencontré par les productions françaises à l’étranger, la presse anglophone annonce la « mort de la culture française ». Face à ces interrogations lancinantes, le xviii^e siècle apparaît à certains comme un âge d'or, le temps béni du « rayonnement » européen, voire universel, d’une culture française contagieuse et irrésistible. De ce phénomène, quelle manifestation plus emblématique en apparence que les troupes de comédiens qui sillonnaient l’Europe, jouant Molière en langue originale aux quatre coins du continent, de Cadix à Saint-Pétersbourg et de Stockholm à Palerme ?

Contre une lecture nostalgique et mystificatrice, Civiliser l’Europe révèle et décrit les mécanismes à l'œuvre dans la dissémination européenne du théâtre français. En s’appuyant sur les méthodes nouvelles de l’histoire transnationale, Rahul Markovits met en lumière la diversité des situations. Princes et ministres en quête de prestige politique, diplomates et chefs militaires promouvant le soft power français, chefs de troupe et comédiens à la recherche d'opportunités économiques, administrateurs napoléoniens convaincus de l'influence civilisatrice des chefs-d'œuvre de la scène française : c'est de l'action de l'ensemble de ces protagonistes qu'est constituée la matière de ce livre.

Le théâtre français n’était pas perçu dans les cours princières comme un simple divertissement ni comme le signe d’une grandeur littéraire incontestée. Représentant aux yeux des élites françaises la quintessence de la civilisation qu'elles prétendaient incarner, il devint sous leur égide, parfois pacifique, parfois brutale, l’instrument d’une tentative d'unification culturelle de l’Europe. L’« Europe française » du Siècle des lumières ne nous tend pas le miroir de notre grandeur culturelle déchue. Elle nous montre que les dominations culturelles ne sont pas massives et univoques, mais souvent relatives et toujours localisées.

Rahul Markovits est maître de conférences à l'Ecole normale supérieure. Agrégé d'histoire, il est spécialiste de l'Europe des Lumières. Il a reçu, en 2012, le prix Etienne Raluze d'histoire locale européenne.

Les foules se déclarant « sans leader » qui émergent aujourd’hui en de nombreux points du monde sont en rupture complète avec l’idée qui a dominé le xxe siècle, selon laquelle « les hommes en foule ne sauraient se passer de maître » (Gustave Le Bon, 1895).
Pourquoi « le besoin de chef » a-t-il pris une telle ampleur à partir de la fin du xixe siècle ? Comment la préoccupation pour le commandement a-t-elle circulé d’un domaine à l’autre, de la guerre à la politique et de la politique à l’industrie ? Comment les formes et le langage du commandement sont-ils devenus transnationaux ? Quel rôle ont joué les sciences sociales, en particulier la psychologie et la sociologie, dans l’affirmation du chef ? C’est à ce type de questions que s’intéresse Yves Cohen dans Le Siècle des chefs.
En articulant une étude des littératures profanes et spécialisées sur le commandement jusqu’à la Seconde Guerre mondiale et une analyse des pratiques des chefs, il nous invite à suivre à la trace les actions des ingénieurs et directeurs d’usine et l’exercice du commandement par Roosevelt, Hitler, et surtout Staline.
Le Siècle des chefs offre ainsi une vaste fresque transversale et internationale de la montée de la figure du chef, fondamentale pour comprendre les spécificités de l’histoire du xxe siècle.

Forms of embodied labor, such as surrogacy and participation in clinical trials, are central to biomedical innovation, but they are rarely considered as labor. Melinda Cooper and Catherine Waldby take on that project, analyzing what they call "clinical labor," and asking what such an analysis might indicate about the organization of the bioeconomy and the broader organization of labor and value today. At the same time, they reflect on the challenges that clinical labor might pose to some of the founding assumptions of classical, Marxist, and post-Fordist theories of labor.
Cooper and Waldby examine the rapidly expanding transnational labor markets surrounding assisted reproduction and experimental drug trials. As they discuss, the pharmaceutical industry demands ever greater numbers of trial subjects to meet its innovation imperatives. The assisted reproductive market grows as more and more households look to third-party providers for fertility services and sectors of the biomedical industry seek reproductive tissues rich in stem cells. Cooper and Waldby trace the historical conditions, political economy, and contemporary trajectory of clinical labor. Ultimately, they reveal clinical labor to be emblematic of labor in twenty-first-century neoliberal economies.

Melinda Cooper is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Sydney. She is the author of Life as Surplus: Biotechnology and Capitalism in the Neoliberal Era.
Catherine Waldby is a Professorial Future Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Sydney. She is coauthor, with Herbert Gottweis and Brian Salter, of The Global Politics of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Science: Regenerative Medicine in Transition and, with Robert Mitchell, of Tissue Economies: Blood, Organs, and Cell Lines in Late Capitalism, which is also published by Duke University Press.

This book argues that European Union institutional mechanics and the EU as a political unit cannot be properly understood without taking into account the elites that make the policy decisions.
Spurred by globalisation, technological and economic development has provided the backbone for social and political transformations that have changed the social structures that unite and differentiate individuals and groups in Europe and their interface with extra-European actors. These developments are not only exemplified by the rise of the EU, but also by the rise of a set of transnational European power elites evolving in and around the European construction.
This book maps out these EU and international interdependencies and provides a comprehensive picture of the European transnational power elites. Moving away from the majority of literature on European integration dominated by economics, law, IR and political science, the volume is written from a sociological perspective that takes into account the individuals that make the policy decisions, the formal and informal groups in which s/he is included, as well as the social conventions that regulate political and administrative activities in the EU.

Depuis deux mille ans, les communautés d’une vaste région montagneuse d’Asie du Sud-Est refusent obstinément leur intégration à l’État. Zomia : c’est le nom de cette zone d’insoumission qui n’apparaît sur aucune carte, où les fugitifs ? environ 100 millions de personnes ? se sont réfugiés pour échapper au contrôle des gouvernements des plaines.

Traités comme des « barbares » par les États qui cherchaient à les soumettre, ces peuples nomades ont mis en place des stratégies de résistance parfois surprenantes pour échapper à l’État, synonyme de travail forcé, d’impôt, de conscription. Privilégiant des modèles politiques d’auto-organisation comme alternative au Léviathan étatique, certains sont allés jusqu’à choisir d’abandonner l’écriture pour éviter l’appropriation de leur mémoire et de leur identité.

James C. Scott propose ici une étonnante contre-histoire de la modernité. Car Zomia met au défi les délimitations géographiques traditionnelles et les évidences politiques, et pose des questions essentielles : que signifie la « civilisation » ? Que peut-on apprendre des peuples qui ont voulu y échapper ? Quelle est la nature des relations entre États, territoires, populations, frontières ?

L'histoire de la rebelle Zomia nous rappelle que la « civilisation » peut être synonyme d’oppression et que le sens de l’histoire n’est pas aussi univoque qu’on le croit.

James C. Scott est professeur de sciences politiques et d’anthropologie à l’université de Yale. Spécialiste de l’Asie du Sud-Est, il est notamment l’auteur de La Domination et les arts de la résistance (Amsterdam, 2009).

While scholarly writing has dealt with the role of law in the process of European integration, so far it has shed little light on the lawyers and communities of lawyers involved in that process. Law has been one of the most thoroughly investigated aspects of the European integration process, and EU law has become a well-established academic discipline, with the emergence more recently of an impressive body of legal and political science literature on 'European law in context'. Yet this field has been dominated by an essentially judicial narrative, focused on the role of the European courts, underestimating in the process the multifaceted roles lawyers and law play in the EU polity, notably the roles they play beyond the litigation arena. This volume seeks to promote a deeper understanding of European law as a social and political phenomenon, presenting a more complete view of the European legal field by looking beyond the courts, and at the same time broadening the scholarly horizon by exploring the ways in which European law is actually made. To do this it describes the roles of the great variety of actors who stand behind legal norms and decisions, bringing together perspectives from various disciplines (law, political science, political sociology and history), to offer a global multi-disciplinary reassessment of the role of 'law' and 'lawyers' in the European integration process.

Lawyers and the Construction of Transnational Justice will show students and scholars what it means in practice to talk about building transnational justice – both on the side of economic regulation and on the side of human rights and humanitarian law. It links national and transnational processes, tracing the activities of lawyers with their successful and less successful strategies to build institutions and credibility for a transnational legal field. Lawyers and the Rule of Law in an Era of Globalization focuses on the national and transnational processes transforming both the rule of law and the role of lawyers. The book draws on a framework that emphasizes the relationship between the national and the international, the strategies of lawyers at various political levels, and the circulation of ideas and people. As such, it considers the 'rule of law', not as a normative ideal that has to be accomplished and realized, but rather as a field of action and discourse that emerges through complex relationships among experts, national elites and global institutions. Cet ouvrage est issu d'un échange entrepris depuis plusieurs années par un groupe d'historiens de la culture et de la littérature, de politistes et de sociologues confrontés aux défis qu'implique aujourd'hui l'étude des faits culturels.
L'internationalisation de la recherche a enrichi l'espace des perspectives et a posé des questions nouvelles. Les Cultural Studies et d'autres travaux nous ont appris à nous affranchir du cadre national et à l'appréhender comme une modalité historiquement située de processus plus larges ou plus étroits. La théorie des champs, l'histoire des concepts et la réflexion sur les échelles d'analyse nous ont permis de mieux comprendre les dynamiques et les tensions traversant les individus et les groupes.
Une communauté de recherche transnationale se doit d'élaborer des hypothèses collectives pour échapper au piège de la miniaturisation sans fin qu'induit la spécialisation. Un mode de pensée partagé a été soumis ici à l'épreuve de terrains empiriques très variés, répartis sur plusieurs siècles et sur différents espaces géographiques et sociaux : l'Europe et l'Amérique, les champs littéraire et théâtral, universitaire et artistique, les mondes de l'édition et de la politique, des auteurs majeurs (Brecht, Henry James, Primo Levi) et des seconds rôles, des avant-gardes et des intermédiaires culturels, des pays historiquement centraux et des nations périphériques.
L'effort d'intégration et de transposition théorique a permis d'aboutir à des acquis comparables et cumulables, par-delà la diversité des thèmes, au croisement des cultures et des disciplines.
