The international reception
(video conference)
 Aubervilliers (France)
22 Jun 2021

Argument and Program

Bourdieu and Passeron's work on education has largely contributed to the international reputation of these authors and to the dissemination of a sociology of relations of domination that is highly empirically equipped. But how were books like Les Héritiers and La reproduction more specifically disseminated? In which countries and according to which logics of reception were these books discovered and reappropriated? What were the exchanges between researchers and teams? How have the different national scientific contexts acted as filters for the international circulation of French sociology of education from the late 1960s to the present? Following the workshop of January 22, we will address these questions based on the cases of the United Kingdom, Brazil and the United States.

Pierre Bourdieu and Physical Culture, Edited by Lisahunter, Wayne Smith, Elke Emerald

Pierre Bourdieu and Physical Culture
Edited by Lisahunter, Wayne Smith, Elke Emerald
Routledge
2015

Présentation de l'éditeur
The work of French sociologist, anthropologist and philosopher Pierre Bourdieu has been influential across a set of cognate disciplines that can be classified as physical culture studies. Concepts such as field, capital, habitus and symbolic violence have been used as theoretical tools by scholars and students looking to understand the nature and purpose of sport, leisure, physical education and human movement within wider society.
Pierre Bourdieu and Physical Culture is the first book to focus on the significance of Bourdieu’s work for, and in, physical culture. Bringing together the work of leading and emerging international researchers, it introduces the core concepts in Bourdieu’s thought and work, and presents a series of fascinating demonstrations of the application of his theory to physical culture studies. A concluding section discusses the inherent difficulties of choosing and using theory to understand the world around us. By providing an in-depth and multi-layered example of how theory can be used across the many and varied components of sport, leisure, physical education and human movement, this book should help all serious students and researchers in physical culture to better understand the importance of social theory in their work.

Re-Thinking Economics: Exploring the Work of Pierre Bourdieu

Re-Thinking Economics
Exploring the Work of Pierre Bourdieu
Edited by Asimina Christoforou, Michael Lainé
Routledge
2014

Présentation de l'éditeur
Once again, unfettered capitalism has failed. Promises for global prosperity and peace have given way to a world of deep recession, social upheaval and political instability. Once again, mainstream economics has proved its inadequacy. Despite its technical rigour and mathematical virtuosity, it failed dramatically to respond to the current crisis. Why is this so? Mainstream economics turns a blind eye to society. By assumption, it maims its analyses by wiping away what makes us what we are. There is pressing need for a critical discussion and new ideas.
We therefore turn to the insightful and stimulating work of Pierre Bourdieu. Arguably one of the major sociologists ever, he was also a major ‘economist’. Yet his works on the economy have received only scant attention, especially from economists, be they ‘mainstream’ or ‘heterodox’. Bourdieu helps to take a broader view and enrich our scientific imagination. By including dimensions of power, intuitive behaviour and social structures within the scope of his analysis, he provides for an alternative foundation of economics, based on an integrated, interdisciplinary theory. For the first time, this volume fills this gap in economics by featuring state-of-the-art research and experts from different social science disciplines. This book constitutes a first step, and hopes to become a milestone.
The book offers an innovative outlook and a unique source for social scientists of all fields, particularly economists and sociologists, who wish to engage in the study of Bourdieu and his economics with a view to developing a more pertinent theory. It will also constitute a useful reference for university students and administrators who would like to explore the economy from a Bourdieusian perspective.

Bourdieu and Data Analysis. Methodological Principles and Practice, Edited by Michael Grenfell and Frédéric Lebaron

Bourdieu and Data Analysis
Methodological Principles and Practice
Edited by  Michael Grenfell and Frédéric Lebaron
Peter Lang
2014

Présentation de l'éditeur
Uniquely amongst the numerous publications to appear on the work of the French social theorist Pierre Bourdieu, this book deals with data analysis, examining a range of techniques and instruments. After an introductory chapter outlining the key principles of Bourdieu’s theory, the book presents detailed examples of data being collected and analysed in a Bourdieusian way across various social science contexts. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are addressed, including analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of each method, as are common data collection procedures such as interview, observation and questionnaire. Examples of Multiple Correspondence Analysis are an important feature of the book, since this was an approach particularly favoured by Bourdieu. In each case study, the pros and cons of different approaches are highlighted and the qualitative/quantitative debate is thoroughly explored. Overall, the book offers readers a blueprint to develop their own methodological plans for using Bourdieu in research practice.

Michael Grenfell is Professor of Education at Trinity College Dublin. His background is in French Studies and his research interests lie in education, language teaching and sociology, focusing particularly on the application of Pierre Bourdieu’s work to a range of research topics. He knew and collaborated with Bourdieu for over twenty years and was three times ‘visiting scholar’ at the École des Hautes Études in Paris. He is the author of Bourdieu and Education: Acts of Practical Theory (with David James, 1998), Bourdieu: Agent Provocateur (2004), Bourdieu, Education and Training (2007), Arts Rules: Bourdieu and the Visual Arts (with Cheryl Hardy, 2007), Bourdieu, Language and Linguistics (2007) and Bourdieu: Key Concepts (2012).
Frédéric Lebaron has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UMR Professions-Institutions- Temporalités) since September 2013, following sixteen years at the University of Picardie-Jules Verne in Amiens, where he directed the Centre Universitaire de Recherches sur l’Action publique et le Politique, Epistémologie et Sciences Sociales. He specializes in social sciences methodology, economic sociology, political sociology and social inequality. His books include Lectures de Pierre Bourdieu (with Gérard Mauger), Les indicateurs sociaux au XXIème siècle, La crise de la croyance économique and Le savant, le politique et la mondialisation.

Présentation de l'éditeur
Offering an in-depth discussion of Bourdieu, New Literacy Studies and education, this frontline book provides a useful reference point for scholars and students of education, language, and literacy wishing to incorporate Bourdieu’s ideas into their work.

There is a well established tradition of using ethnographic perspectives to study classroom practice. What this volume contributes is two distinctive approaches to the social study of education in general and literacy in particular: New Literacy Studies and Bourdieusian sociology, both integrated with such ethnographic perspectives.

The guiding principle behind the structure of this book is how it develops and unfolds dialogically. More than just a set of stand-alone chapters around social perspectives on language interactions in classrooms, this ‘integrated text’:

* provides practical examples of New Literacy Studies and Bourdieu used in ethnographic classroom contexts

* offers a synthesis considering the practical examples in terms of the range of issues of theory and method presented

* extends and develops many of the questions and issues raised in terms of a future practical research agenda

Beyond the field of education, language in education, classroom ethnography, and literacy, scholars and students across a wide range of disciplines in which Bourdieu attracts attention also will find this volume relevant.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Pierre Bourdieu is regarded as one of the foremost social philosophers of the twentieth century. His output included extensive studies of education, culture, art and language. He went beyond being a sociologist to being regarded in the same 'public intellectual' role as Sartre, de Beauvoir and Foucault.
Issues surrounding language permeate Bourdieu's entire oeuvre. Although he did undertake empirical studies on language in a range of contexts, very little of this was published. This book redresses this balance; it sets out what Bourdieu has to say about language and why, and exemplifies this approach through a series of empirical language studies.
This book will appeal to researchers across the world in fields such as sociology, philosophy, cultural studies, anthropology but is of especial interest to language and linguistics scholars.
